VIDEO: CMU’s Safer Sex Patrol

Safer Sex Patrol, much to many CMU students’ surprise, is not an RSO (registered student organization). It is a program affiliated with Central Michigan University through the Mary Ellen Brandell Volunteer Center. The group has a goal of promoting safer sex and reducing STI’s through out not only Central Michigan University, but the Mt. Pleasant Community as well.

All information passed on by safer sex patrol has to be certified by the health area of CMU and the Public Relations area of CMU, making this program truly unique. The facilitators of Safer Sex Patrol represent more than the program, but CMU as whole. Volunteers are reminded of this when creating a name tag for the “bar patrols” that the group has become known for. The Lanyards they wear identify them as a CMU students when they go out into the community and offer condoms and abstinence candy to people at the many popular bars of Mt. Pleasant.

In addition to bar patrols, the group holds many informational sessions and facilitates discussions about sex and how to make it safer, a taboo subject to many. The group holds events of their own and also offer events to Residence Halls on campus and greek groups. They truly make an environment where every one is welcome and strive to create a safe place where young adults can talk openly about sex and STIs.
