This week I had a burst of activity. Thursday I visited Exit Glacier of Kenai Fjord National Park, and Friday I took my first boat tour of the park (photos to come in next post). As a photojournalist, it’s hard for me to not immediately download photos and edit away, critiquing the moments I captured that day. I gave it 24 hours before downloading in attempts to let the natural images that I took in myself settle.
The scenery here is unbelievable. I know that’s cliche, but if you ever visit here you’ll know what I mean when I say that it feels surreal. Looking back at photos from the past 48 hours has completely blown me away- again. The beauty of this place, like for most, has only existed to me through the photos of blogs and magazines. Now I get to keep the images that I created myself, and I’m not talking about the images created through the lens. But the real images and experiences that I got to witness with my own eyes.
I’ll admit, I’m addicted to capturing what I see around me. As many other photojournalists feel, I get serious anxiety when my camera’s not with me (which isn’t very often… as I sit here in a coffee shop with my Canon 70D sitting 1 foot away from me). But, what I’m slowly learning here as a photojournalist is that it’s just as important to fully take in what’s around you as well as capturing that stunning image. With out the feelings that you experience while capturing that moment, how can you possibly share it accurately with the world?
