Alaska – Day One

I arrived in Alaska at 2:30 p.m. Alaskan time yesterday for literally the internship of a lifetime. Technically speaking, I had gotten up at midnight the night before (Alaskan time) to travel to the airport in Saginaw, MI. So it’s obvious to say that I was a little tired after arriving, but determined to stay up until at least 9 p.m. before going to bed in order to reset my clock. It didn’t totally work, as I woke up at 4 a.m. thinking it must be at least 11 a.m. So, I forced myself to calm my excited nerves until a reasonable time before getting up and exploring the sensational town of Seward. Harder than it seems when your clock is four hours off and the sun is up taunting you to explore at 4 a.m.

I’l be riding a bike to an destination here, and quite honestly, it’s a really nice bike that the National Park Service has provided me. At 9 a.m. I left my new apartment, camera packed away in my hiking back pack and ready to find a great coffee shop.  I’m happy to report that I’ve found one that allows me to stay connected, drink a killer cup of coffee and have a GLUTEN FREE MEAL! I was extremely worried about staying gluten free in Alaska for three months, but now I’ve found this amazing place (The Sea Bean) as well as an organic store that will let me live life gluten free with out too much trouble. How did I luck out with that, huh? Not to mention the plethora of restaurants around here offering probably the most amazing seafood I will ever eat.

I spent all day traveling the Resurrection Bay area and tried to leave multiple times, to only get pulled back by a new wildlife sighting. Today I saw Sea Lions and Sea Otters. Both firsts for me! Here’s just a few pictures from my first day:
