GMO’s, or genetically modified organisms, are stirring up controversy around the world, particualarly the United States. The World Health Organization defines genetically modified organisms as organisms in which the genetic material has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally. It allows selected individual genes to be transferred from one organism into another, including between nonrelated species. Some developed nations consider GMO’s to be unsafe and have restricted or banned the distribution of them. In the United States the regulations have been kept at bay, making grocery that the general public buys a mystery to if it is a GMO or not. Some sources estimate that up to 80% of American produce is a GMO. This has made the topic a popular controversy with the American public.

Behind the Lens: This photo shoot was an adventure. I originally wanted to take a similar picture with a piece of corn and the syringes, but 3 stores in Mt. Pleasant confirmed my suspicion that they were completely out of season. I used the black background to keep the reflections on the syringes more dramatic.
